Mobile VR Marketing and Education

The purpose of this article is to show that VR, in particular, Mobile VR’s uptake is growing at a rapid rate. We also have a few controversial comments in regards to what is VR 🙂

At AustechVR we speak with a lot of people and we also read a lot of stories online regarding the current state of Virtual Reality (VR) and the rise of Augmented Reality (AR). We find that there is always some hand-wringing from many that think VR is not being picked up fast enough or that AR is going to completely blow VR out of the water.

Prior to the recent Apple iPhone 8 and X release, many industry insiders were predicting that AR would crush VR and that would be that. This opinion has all but evaporated recently due to the iPhone not being nearly as AR ready as some may have wished.

All of a sudden there is a lot of chatter regarding VR which is great.

Now, VR is a big landscape. Proper VR if you would call it that is most commonly run on the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, these two platforms are in a price war at the moment. These headsets are “True” VR, they provide 6 degrees of Freedom (6DoF) which means that you can walk around the Virtual Environment and interact with different objects in that environment.

This allows for some pretty amazing games and apps such as the Tilt Brush and also allows for some pretty realistic on the job training for anyone from Mechanics to Surgeons.

There is only one problem – That is that the Vive and Oculus Rift has had a small take up of users due to the price of the headset and the fact that you need a very beefy computer with a high end graphics card to run it.

VR Marketing

What is Virtual Reality?

Let’s talk about Mobile VR. Some VR enthusiasts get upset when we use the term VR for phones because they say it is not technically VR. They say to have Virtual Reality you need 6DoF, anything else is just 360-Degree technology.

What does Wikipedia say Virtual Reality is?

Virtual reality (VR) is a computer technology that uses Virtual Reality Headsets or multi-projected environments, sometimes in combination with physical spaces, to generate realistic images, sounds and other sensations that simulate a user’s physical presence in a virtual or imaginary environment.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_realityhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_reality

So I read that and would have to say that Mobile VR is actually Virtual Reality. It simulates a user’s physical presence in a virtual or imaginary environment.

360-Degree ticks the box on this, when you see a person put on a Google Cardboard Headset for the first time and experience 360-Degree video inside that device they are blown away. That simple 360 footage experienced from inside a Cardboard Headset can feel very immersive, particularly if you add to that some headphones!

Marketing and VR.

VR Marketing

A lot of people would say that games are a massive driver of Virtual Reality. I would certainly agree with that, they have pushed us to where we are now particularly with the higher end headsets and a lot of the new stand alone headsets that will be coming out late 2017 including the Vive Focus. http://phandroid.com/2017/09/18/standalone-vr-headset-htc-vive-focus/

What we are seeing from our viewpoint in Australia is a massive push by Marketing companies to provide immersive 360-Degree experiences the Google Cardboard. A few points here, nearly everyone has a smartphone that is capable of running Google Cardboard VR Apps starting with Youtube.

Businesses have twigged that Immersive Media not only shows people something but allows them to experience something! The potential customer have not just seen it, they have been there.

Coupled with some snappy branding on Google Cardboard Headsets you have a clear winner on how to have people actually remember and enjoy their interaction with your Brand or Cause.

In this day and age where people are so much more in tune with advertising this is something that really stands out and at the same time feels completely intuitive and natural.

Another area we are seeing a lot of growth is in the education sector. Education institutions ranging from State Schools through to Universities are utilising Mobile VR at an ever-increasing rate.

Putting students into an immersive environment flicks the switch for a lot of kids, they are fully immersed in an environment and loving the experience as opposed to staring out the window whilst they watch another dry Video or read from a book.

As we know, not all kids learn the same way and Mobile VR really engages with most providing a good chance that most students will learn. We have seen Language Apps, Googles own Expeditions as some VR Apps being utilised with an ever growing list.

So from where we sit, VR is in a good space. Immersive Media, Mobile Phone Technology and Cheap Headsets such as the Google Cardboard or VRGo are helping this along with the vital ingredient, people.

Virtual Tours – Unfair Advantage in Real Estate

Virtual Tours – Unfair Advantage in Real Estate

Any Real Estate Business worth its salt is using Professional High-Quality images, Video introducing Property and even Drones to show the Property from above.

But, there is one thing that some very successful agents are using that is not only bringing in more clients but also many more high quality leads for the properties that they are selling.

This one thing is Virtual Tours! The ability to have clients from anywhere on the Planet stroll through the property virtually is revolutionary.

The buyer already knows what the property looks like, after all, they have been there and already fallen in love with it.

After a potential client has been through a Virtual Tour then they can decide if they want to look at the property physically which makes them a very valuable lead.

A Virtual Tour of a Rural Property Enables more prospective buyers to view the property

The buyer already knows what the property looks like, after all, they have been there and already fallen in love with it. Even better, imagine selling a property after a Virtual Tour and the appropriate due diligence, it has happened.

We have found that Buyers are 60% more likely to email an agent and 95% more likely to call about a property listed on www.realestate.com.au that has a 3D Virtual Tour. (Source: Mixpanel Analytics, iOs app, last 30 days as of 19 May 2016).

The thing is, many Real Estate Businesses have not caught onto the power of the Virtual Tour, particularly one that is so Stunning and Engaging as the Virtual Tours that AustechVR provide. The other point is, is that the public is switching onto and loving Virtual Tours.

We have found that price is a perceived barrier for many Agents but is, in reality, a lot more affordable than what you would think. The Return on this small investment in particularly for higher end properties or properties in Rural Regions is staggering.

In addition to the assumption of the cost we have found many Agents are hesitant in adopting new marketing technologies or methods, they prefer to wait and see what the market leaders in Real Estate do and then jump on board.

Are you a market leader?

How to watch 360 degree video on your computer

360 degree video

How to Watch 360 Degree Video on your Computer

We all know when you watch 360 Video content on your phone that you can easily move the phone around and see all around. You can also use your finger and easily swipe left to right and really navigate to whatever place easily.

What about when you are in youtube on your computer? I have seen loads of people trying to grab at the video with their mouse and moving it around and that does not seem to work very well.

What you need to be doing in Youtube is clicking with your mouse onto the 360 navigation circle on the top left of the 360 degree video.

Of course it is much better to watch immersive video in a VR Headset but that is not always practical.

Once you have clicked on that you can use your keyboard arrows to then look left or right or up and down. This creates a more enjoyable and seamless experience for watching 360 content on your computer.

Give it a go on the Clash of Clans 360 video on youtube now!

Vimeo is much the same but a lot easier. You see with Youtube, you must click on that circle navigation area before using your keyboard arrows.

With Vimeo, just start playing the 360 video and you can begin spinning around with your keyboard arrows without clicking. Although if somehow you cannot spin around with the keyboard arrows you still have the circle navigation area to click on and activate on the right hand side of the video. Test it out on the video below!

3D Virtual Tours

3D Virtual Tours

Imagine your Real Estate listings, restaurant, store or Space being visited by people from all over the world in an amazing 3D 4K photo-realistic Virtual model.

Imagine someone walking around your shop, seeing a product inside this Virtual model and then clicking on it so that they can buy it from your online store.

Imagine a buyer for a wonderful Real Estate listing that lives interstate conducting their own Open House from their living room 5,000 Km away and knowing that this is the property for them.

Now, this is all possible with Matterport 3D Virtual Tour technology and AustechVR can make it happen. And people can do this from any device such as a Mobile Phone, Tablet or Computer. They can even view your space through Virtual Reality Headsets in full VR mode!

Try it below!

Matterport is changing many industries with it’s 3D Virtual Tour Technology, particularly in the world of Real Estate. It enables people to walk through the 3D model Virtually either via Virtual Reality Headsets or even on their Mobile Phones.

There is a lot of enthusiasm building with this technology, it allows people to travel from one state or city to another virtually, enabling them to actually experience the space as it is.

The key point here is you see the space just as it is!

Quite often you will find that Photography can be shot with wide lenses which make the room, house or space look much bigger than it actually is. This can lead to disappointment from potential buyers or customers as they feel let down when faced with the space in real life.

The Matterport 3D 360 Scan builds an accurately scaled 3D map with very high photographs layered over the top of the 3D map to show the property or space exactly as it is.

3D Virtual Tours engage people

Choose your own adventure, you can really choose where you turn, where you look and where you linger. This is one of the advantages over a traditional video which certainly still has a place, with a video you are taken where the camera is pointed. 3D Virtual Tours are designed so you can travel anywhere in the property at your leisure.

Let us touch on Retail and 3D Virtual Tours! Imagine a physical retail store that sells bikes, they have a website also! Well, we can scan that shop then clickable tags to the bikes that would then take you to their online store.

This allows you to actually walk around a retail store then click on the bike that they like the look of and investigate further and potentially buy. This is staggering technology when we can actually shop like this from the comfort of your couch.

With the Matterport Pro2, you are able to create the 3D Virtual Tours but there is more. We can also create very accurate Floor Plans, Highlight Reel in Video, prepare the space for Virtual Reality usage within a VR Headset. The big kicker is the High-Resolution Images that the Pro2 produces, these can be used for brochures, Web Listings or any other marketing requirement.

The High-Resolution photos can be up to a staggering 8092 x 4552 pixels (36 MP), that is very impressive.

You may have noticed I have mentioned tags, to be more accurate Matterport Tags. These enable the Matterport technician to tag features of your space or property.

This can be information on an amazing feature within the home, the menu of a restaurant we are scanning or the link to a product from a retail store to that sites eCommerce shop.

Another amazing feature that you are able to utilise in the tags is the ability to add video, so when someone clicks on the tag you can have a product video, informational video or even a short youtube clip of the fireplace in full flight!

The possibilities and the wow factor that these features bring are amazing, this tech really does put you in the best place to push your property or business.

Imagine the possibilities of the value of tags in places such as Museums, Libraries, and exhibitions!

Another brilliant way of using the Matterport 3D scanner is to monitor and report on Construction Projects. You can scan at different intervals of the construction process so that all major stakeholders are completely aware of what is happening.

After that you have information moving forward on the skeletons of the project which allows you to see what is behind the walls in years to come. How close is this to Time Travel?

Shooting 360 Video

360 still

Shooting 360 Video

At AustechVR we believe that 360 Video going to take Australia by storm. We will detail some handy hints on Shooting 360 Video to ensure you get the best out of your equipment.

The major difference between 360 Video and Standard video is frame! With a standard video you could choose exactly what to fill your frame with and it did not matter what was to the side of that as your audience could not see it.

With 360 video, there is no frame! This poses many issues and makes you think a little more about what and how you are going to film. This could be a problem or it could be a positive for your footage but what it really does is changes everything!

So let us dive into some points that you may have to think about when creating 360 Video.

Frames

No Frames, you have to be aware of your surroundings! Let’s just say you cannot film in a studio anymore where to the left and right there is a mess and people doing whatever. Simply that all becomes part of the video!

This also provides an opportunity to start thinking out of the box and finding unique places to film. You are able to show off your environment in full detail, this is great for unique spaces and of course, a never-ending supply of natural environments.

Just look at that Eagle Video above for a perfect example.

Being in Shot

Most of the time you will not want to be in shot unless you are carrying something like our Pluto 360 Camera for Android! So, if you do not want to be in shot you will need to look for a place to hide or even take yourself out in post production.

Thankfully nearly every 360 Camera is operated via Phone App, Ipad App or Workstations so if you need to be in another room or around the corner this is not a problem.

There is another trick, if there are loads of people around just sit yourself down and act casual, no-one will ever notice you!

Or, if you are a vlogger, this is no problem at all. 🙂

360 Brisbane Eye from AustechVR on Vimeo.

Zooming in

You cannot zoom in on certain things, so you have the option of either cutting then moving the camera closer to object X or you move the camera whilst filming to object X. This can be with a dolly system, remote control or even Drones if your Camera is small enough. This takes us to the next point, motion sickness.

Motion Sickness

If you walk around with a 360 Camera the chances are that you will be moving it up and down with each step. Imagine being on a ship with the horizon rising and falling as you look out, the same thing happens with the horizon on your footage and can cause motion sickness very quickly.

So, it is advisable to get creative with where you place your camera and aim to film from one spot. If you need to move there is nothing wrong with stopping the filming process and then cutting the next scene in.

As mentioned above, you can use a dolly system where you pull your camera along, remote control vehicles or Drones. Another great tool to use is a vehicle, you can attach the Camera to a vehicle and drive around, there will be no rising and falling horizon.

Stitch Lines

Stitching is what must happen to ensure that all your Cameras on your 360 Rig come together smoothly. Most stitching these days is done on Camera, in App or with software either in the Cloud or on your computer.

Know where your stitch lines will be, to do this experiment and check your footage so that when you are filming something say a person they are not standing between two cameras and being stitched together.

Stitch lines still do exist but they are not as pronounced as they used to be with earlier cameras but they can still pose a problem if you are not aware of them.

Hosting 360 Content

There are many ways to share your 360 Content these days. My favorites are Youtube, Vimeo, Facebook and VeeR TV  These platforms have millions of thirsty consumers ready to watch your 360 videos!

Of course, 360 Video is able to be viewed in Google Cardboard Headsets or any other Virtual Reality Headset. Simply go into VR mode and the screen splits into two so that you have one screen for each VR Headset Lens and you are suddenly immersed in the video! It is as if you are there and it is magic!

Be aware that when you have your video hosted the quality will drop due to compression methods used by hosts. As long as you are aware of this then you will not be upset.

I hope this short article gives you something to think about and makes your journey into 360 Video that little bit easier.

360 Video

360 Video

We have all heard of 360 Video, perhaps you have seen it on Facebook recently or on Youtube! Well, 360 Video is here to stay and accessible to everyone. One phrase says it all – Capture Everything!

Think of traditional video, you are seeing one small frame a scene, we have become accustomed to this and really do not miss the other pieces. This is because since most of us can remember we have only had that little square or now it is a rectangle to view films or video.

Of course, TV shows and Movies will continue to use this method into the future as far as i can see because it is a way of really dialing into the story and content. We now have another option, 360-degree video.

We used to hear about our first steps second hand before the camera. Once the Camera became common place we may have seen pictures of our first steps, then 35 mm film and later Handy Cam’s would show us those first steps.

Now you have the opportunity to not only capture those first steps on film, but the whole environment you were taking those first steps in – with 360-degree views! This is powerful, simply you are now able to Capture Everything!

This 360-degree video technology has become more affordable in the last 12 months, you can now pick up a 4K 360 Degree Camera for under $200.

This is a game changer, you will be able to whack your Google Cardboard or Virtual Reality Headset on and watch as if you were there. Or share on Facebook and allow your friends to scroll around or use your smartphones gyro sensor to look around the video.

Youtube has a large collection of 360-degree video, check them out!

Vimeo, the other large player in online video has recently allowed 360-degree video content to be uploaded to their site as well.

So you can see that these giants of online video are taking 360 seriously, it will not be long until everyone is using 360 degree Camera’s here in Australia.

On a recent trip to China I discovered that 360 degree video is firmly entrenched and popular amongst the Chinese. They have really adopted this format and cannot get enough of it to record their memories. This trend has caught on in the United States but not to the extent it has in China yet.

Of course, Australia can have a slight lag when it comes to jumping onto technology but we have seen a definite uptake on the need of 360 degree video here.

So, if you are thinking of jumping into 360 videos, this is a perfect time. Have a look at some of our  360 Camera’s here and remember, Capture Everything!

Google VR Teams up with HTC Vive

Google VR

Google VR and HTC Vive

A lot has been announced by google at it’s annual Google I/O conference and it was all good for Google VR. At the time of writing this, we are only halfway through Day 2!

Let us start with the news that HTC and Google are both partnering up to create a new standalone VR Headset that will be powered by Daydream. Lenovo is also working with Google to create its own standalone VR Headset as well.

htc-vive-daydream-headset-640x360

We are all hoping that this brings a full and complete Virtual Reality Experience without being tethered to a high powered graphics card in a computer like the amazing HTC Vive or Oculus Rift Headsets. As you can see by the video below it looks very sleek so it will be awesome to get our hands on these headsets when they do come out and see what they can do.

Now, will we get 6 Degrees of Freedom? (6DoF) Google announced that these new systems will be using a positional tracking system called WorldSense which improve tracking by a fair way over previous Daydream devices.

Worldsense is built with an inside-out tracking technology that means that external sensors are not used. This will improve immersion into the VR world you are experiencing over the phone based experience many are used too.

Will it be Vive like? The jury is out, I am sure that there will be more information filtering out on the interwebs as the release date comes closer. Take a look at what Google show us in the promo below, it shows that we can dodge and move our heads. I am sure accesories for hands and hopefully feet will be released to allow more movement.

But there is more, WorldSense also maps the world around you. Check out this animation that was released day 1 of Google I/O. This is very cool and opens up a lot of possibilities for these new headsets and technology.

The price of these new devices will be similar to what the HTC Vive is now. The great thing is that you do not need to buy a PC and install a high powered Graphics Card into it. Also, there will be no installation factors such as laying cables etc when preparing your VR area. In fact your VR Area can be anywhere you please.
